GPD PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

OUR MISSION

The Guam Police Department (GPD) Peer Support Program is a mental health initiative designed to support the well-being of police officers and other department personnel. Law enforcement officers often face significant stress and trauma due to the nature of their work, and the Peer Support Program is intended to provide emotional and psychological support from within the department. Due to the nature of their work, law enforcement officers often face significant stress and trauma.

KEY ASPECTS

Confidential Support: The program offers a confidential space where officers can talk about their experiences, challenges, and feelings with trained peer supporters. These peers are fellow officers who have received specialized training in providing emotional support, recognizing signs of distress, and guiding their colleagues toward appropriate resources.

Mental Health Awareness: The program promotes awareness of mental health issues and encourages officers to seek help. It aims to reduce the stigma often associated with asking for mental health support within law enforcement.

Crisis Intervention: Peer supporters are trained to intervene in crisis situations, providing immediate support and helping to de-escalate emotional or mental health crises. They can also assist in connecting individuals with professional mental health services if necessary.

Resilience Building: The program emphasizes the importance of building resilience and coping strategies to handle the unique stresses of police work. This can include stress management techniques, coping mechanisms, and wellness practices.

Supportive Environment: By fostering a culture of support within the department, the program helps create a more positive work environment where officers feel valued and supported in their mental health and well-being.
